Brignone Acknowledges Gut-Behrami’s Dominance in World Cup SuperG
Val d’Aosta: Italy’s Federica Brignone paid homage to Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami on Sunday after the Swiss skier outperformed her in the World Cup SuperG. Gut-Behrami secured the title by excelling in the final race of the season, finishing ahead of American Lindsey Vonn, who took second place, with Brignone coming in third.
According to Ansa News Agency, the 34-year-old Brignone expressed her focus on the upcoming giant slalom on Tuesday, aiming to increase her title count to three. Brignone remarked on Gut-Behrami’s performance, stating, “Today Lara did another sport,” acknowledging the Swiss skier’s exceptional skill that prevented her from claiming the super-G cup alongside her overall title and downhill title. The latter two were secured after the last downhill at Sun Valley was canceled due to heavy snow.
Brignone commented on the conditions, noting that the super-G suited both her and Gut-Behrami’s characteristics, but required some adjustments. She admitted to making a crucial mistake midway through the race. Additionally, she recognized Vonn’s podium finish as noteworthy. Reflecting on her performance, Brignone said, “I should have done something special to beat Lara,” mentioning the challenges presented by the track layout and changing snow conditions.
Concluding her remarks, Brignone took responsibility for her mistakes and emphasized her determination for the upcoming giant slalom. “Now I’m thinking about Tuesday’s giant slalom, and I’ll need to ski like I’ve done all winter, otherwise I won’t have a chance,” Brignone stated.
