Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni Addresses Rising Hostility and Death Threats
Rome: The Italian political climate is becoming more and more barbaric, Premier Giorgia Meloni said on Italian TV Tuesday night, expressing that she had now lost count of death threats against her.
According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni shared her concerns during an appearance on the show Cinque Minuti on Rai TV. She stated, “I fear a climate that is becoming significantly more barbaric,” reflecting on the increasing hostility she perceives. Meloni noted that Italy has experienced similar tensions in the past, suggesting the current situation is a regression to previous times.
Meloni emphasized the normalization of extreme behaviors and rhetoric in the political landscape, saying, “I see so many things that we’re starting to take for granted, and they’re not.” She highlighted the overwhelming number of death threats she receives, admitting, “I no longer count the death threats, I don’t even have time to report them.”
Further, Meloni pointed to the accusations leveled against her and her government, particularly those claiming complicity in genocide in Gaza, as contributing factors to the threats. She remarked, “I think there are responsibilities, for example, of those who say I have blood on my hands, that I and this government are complicit in genocide.”
