Italy Sets Ambitious Target of 19 Medals for Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics
Milan: With 100 days to go until the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, Italian Olympic Committee President Luciano Buonfiglio has announced Italy’s goal of securing a minimum of 19 medals. This announcement was made during a press conference at Milan’s Triennale museum, a significant event marking the countdown to the prestigious international sports competition.
According to Ansa News Agency, Buonfiglio expressed both excitement and the honor of representing Italian sport on this global stage. The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) has decided to maintain the prize money for athletes at the same level as the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, with 180,000 euros awarded for a gold medal, 90,000 euros for silver, and 60,000 euros for bronze. Furthermore, the committee confirmed that the government has pledged to make these prizes tax-free, providing further incentive for athletes to perform at their best.
However, Italy’s aspirations have been challenged by injuries to some of its top winter sports athlet
es. Notably, Alpine skier Marta Bassino is likely to miss the Games after suffering a tibia fracture during training. Similarly, Federica Brignone, who claimed the overall Alpine skiing World Cup titles in 2020 and 2025, is currently working against the clock to recover from a double leg fracture sustained in April. Despite these setbacks, the Italian team remains committed to achieving their medal target.
