Space Bill Passed into Law Amid Opposition Criticism

Rome: A government bill focused on the space economy has been passed into law following a Senate vote, with 76 senators in favor and 57 against. The bill’s passage has sparked controversy, with opposition members alleging that the legislation is designed to benefit Elon Musk’s ventures, a claim that the government has consistently denied.

According to Ansa News Agency, the opposition has voiced strong objections, describing the bill as “a gift to Elon Musk’s Starlink.” Rumors suggest that the government is in discussions with Starlink to provide fast strategic Internet services, raising concerns about potential national security risks. In contrast, the bill’s proponents argue that the legislation is necessary for aligning with international regulations, highlighting the growing importance of the space economy and the increasing involvement of private enterprises.

Despite the opposition’s criticism, the majority in the Senate defended the bill, emphasizing the need for regulatory harmonization in an evolving market. Government rapporteur Adriano Paroli from Forza Italia acknowledged that while the bill is a step forward, it remains “a text that can be improved,” suggesting that further refinements could be made in the future.
