‘It Wasn’t Suicide But Femicide’, Husband on Trial

Bologna: The preliminary investigations judge of the Bologna Court, Salvatore Romito, has sent 63-year-old Leonardo Magri to trial on charges of aggravated murder. Magri is accused of killing his wife, Daniela Gaiani, who was found dead on September 5, 2021, in their home in Castello d’Argile. Initial investigations suggested suicide; however, prosecutors have now determined it to be a case of femicide.

According to Ansa News Agency, Magri, who is represented by lawyer Ermanno Corso, maintains his innocence and is currently on parole. The trial is set to commence on September 24 before the Court of Assizes, with Judge Fabio Cosentino presiding over the proceedings.

Prosecutor Augusto Borghini has emphasized that what initially appeared to be a suicide has been re-evaluated as yet another instance of femicide. This incident is part of a troubling trend of violence against women and girls that Italy is currently experiencing.
