Mattarella Condemns October 7 Massacre as a Humanitarian Scar

Rome: President Sergio Mattarella said the October 7 massacres of Israeli civilians by Hamas was a scar for the whole of humanity on the second anniversary on Tuesday while stressing that concern for the plight of Palestinian civilians in Gaza must not be allowed to feed anti-Semitism. “October 7, 2023, is, and will remain, on our consciences as a vile page of history: a cowardly terrorist attack that took place against defenceless Israeli citizens, doing grave damage to the cause of peace and mutual security in Palestine,” Mattarella said, describing the massacre as “a wound that affected all peoples.”

According to Ansa News Agency, Mattarella emphasized the need to separate the humanitarian concerns for Palestinian civilians from any resurgence of anti-Semitic sentiments. He warned against allowing the “different feeling” that the events in Gaza provoke to “flow into the ignoble one of anti-Semitism,” which he noted has historically led to “peaks of monstrous atrocity.” Mattarella stressed that this form of hatred is often based on “stupidity and the spread of hatred.”

The president’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions in the region, where the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has garnered international attention. Mattarella’s statement highlights the importance of addressing these challenges without allowing prejudices to resurface, particularly in a global context where anti-Semitic sentiments can easily be inflamed.
