Salvini Accuses CGIL of Political Warfare Over General Strike

Rome: Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, who also leads the right-wing League party, expressed strong criticism of the left-wing CGIL trade union on Friday, accusing it of engaging in political warfare through its organization of a general strike for the Global Sumud Flotilla for Gaza. Salvini stated that the government would respond appropriately to the union’s actions.

According to Ansa News Agency, Salvini highlighted the disruptions caused by the strike, noting that by midday, there were 30 injured police officers, as well as blockages at stations and airports, and closed highways. He criticized the union for proceeding with a strike that had been declared illegitimate, emphasizing that proper protocol requires strikes to be announced 10 days in advance, not just two.

Salvini stressed the government’s responsibility to protect the rights of Italians to mobility, work, education, and healthcare. He mentioned that with 40 more strikes planned by the year’s end, he would ensure measures are in place to safeguard these rights. Salvini concluded that the CGIL had opted for political conflict under the guise of peace, and the government was prepared to respond accordingly.
