Pro-Palestine Protesters Disrupt Lecture at University of Pisa

Rome: A group of pro-Palestine students invaded a lecture being held at the University of Pisa’s political science department on Tuesday, forcing the lesson to be abandoned. The incident led to significant disruption as the students interrupted the session, causing chaos within the academic setting.

According to Ansa News Agency, the teacher, Rino Casella, a professor of comparative law, sustained bruises while attempting to prevent the lecture hall’s occupation. Following the incident, Casella sought medical attention at a hospital and subsequently reported the episode to the police by pressing charges.

The group responsible for the disruption, ‘Studenti per la Palestina,’ had previously labeled Casella as a “Zionist professor” on social media platforms. This characterization appears to have been a motivating factor in the demonstration against his lecture.

In response to the incident, Higher Education Minister Anna Maria Bernini contacted several key figures, including Professor Casella, University Recto
r Riccardo Zucchi, and Pisa Prefect Maria Luisa D’Alessandro. Bernini expressed her concerns regarding the incident, emphasizing the unacceptable nature of such disruptions within academic institutions.

Bernini stated, “Universities are not no-fly zones where interrupting lectures or assaulting professors is allowed.” She further condemned the actions, highlighting that what occurred at the University of Pisa is intolerable for a society that values democracy. Bernini stressed the importance of maintaining an open, free, and inclusive academic community within both Pisa and the broader Italian context.
