I’ll Never Say Who on Centre Right Saved Me, Declares Ilaria Salis

Brussels: Ilaria Salis, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, expressed her steadfast decision to withhold the identity of the centre-right Member of the European Parliament (MEP) who voted against the move to lift her immunity from prosecution in Hungary. This decision came after a narrow vote in her favor by just one vote at the European Parliament, amidst accusations of her involvement in an alleged attack on far-rightists.

According to Ansa News Agency, Salis criticized the right-wing League party, claiming they were opposed to an Italian trial and would prefer her extradition to Hungary. She denounced the League, led by Matteo Salvini, labeling them as “fascists” in contrast to democratic anti-fascist values. Her remarks followed Salvini’s condemnation of the MEP who defied party lines to support Salis, describing them as a “traitor.”

Salis, responding to Salvini’s comments about “traitors of the centre right,” argued that the true betrayal was handing over a fellow citizen to what she referred to as an authoritarian regime. She firmly stated, “You never attack the enemy,” underscoring her stance against revealing the identity of the MEP who had privately expressed support. When pressed for the name, Salis resolutely replied that she would “never” disclose it.
