1956 Revolution Commemorated as a Symbol of National Self-Determination in Kópháza


KÓphÁza: The town of Kópháza marked the anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution with a ceremony emphasizing the revolution as a symbol of national self-determination. Dr. Imre Vejkey, a member of parliament and chairman of the Parliament’s Justice Committee, highlighted the enduring importance of the uprising, noting the sacrifices of its martyrs in his address at the County Hospital of Gyor-Moson-Sopron.

According to KDNP, Dr. Vejkey stressed that the events of October 1956 represented not only liberation from dictatorship but also the assertion of a nation’s right to self-determination. He elaborated on the personal and collective memories of the revolution, recounting stories of families torn apart and the impact of historical events on the local community. He shared the personal story of Mátyás Firtl, mayor of Kópháza, whose family was separated during the upheaval.

The ceremony included the laying of wreaths at the historical memorial park, with Dr. Vejkey and Mayor Firtl paying tribute to the her
oes of 1956. The Sopron Organization of the KDNP also participated in the commemoration, further honoring the memory of those who contributed to the revolution.

Mátyás Firtl expressed his gratitude to Dr. Vejkey on social media, acknowledging his contribution to the ceremony. The event featured a program by 7th-grade students from Nakovich Mihály Primary School and Kindergarten, a recitation by László Szabó, and the involvement of traditional hussars, contributing to the solemnity of the occasion.
