Meloni Affirms Italy’s Commitment to NATO Amid EU Defense Discussions

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni, responding to questions about future European Union defense strategies following the recent NATO summit, emphasized Italy’s current alignment with NATO, asserting that decisions on defense affiliations will be made in the future.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni highlighted Italy’s integral role within NATO, describing it as the Western defense system that relies on collaboration among national armies. She explained that any shift towards an independent European defense system would require a re-evaluation of Italy’s position within NATO.

Meloni further clarified that developing a separate EU defense would either necessitate a departure from NATO or the creation of a NATO-level defense system within the EU, which does not presently exist. She emphasized Italy’s role as a key European pillar within NATO, focusing on enhancing cooperation and coordination among European defense entities and industries, aligning with current efforts to strengthen defense capabilities at the European level.
