Italy Needs Acceleration to Meet UN Agenda 2030 SDGs – Istat

Rome: Italy is lagging in its progress towards achieving the United Nations Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), necessitating urgent acceleration, Istat reported in a recent assessment.

According to Ansa News Agency, the national statistics agency Istat conducted an extensive analysis involving 240 statistical measures related to the SDGs. This analysis compared data from the most recent years, primarily 2023 or 2024, against the preceding year and a decade earlier. The findings revealed a “mixed” outlook.

The report highlighted that over 50% of the measures showed improvement in the last year, and more than 60% improved over the past decade. However, over 20% of the measures experienced “stagnation” both in the short and long term.

Istat pointed out that “deteriorations are evident” in more than one out of four measures in the short term and over 15% in the long term. In the past year, the goals with the least progress, marked by stagnation or decline, included Goal 15 (Life on Land), Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and Goal 5 (Gender Equality).

Within these goals, over 60% of the measures remained stable or worsened, with Goal 15 and Goal 16 showing particularly high percentages of 89% and 80% respectively. The report also noted that negative performances were more prevalent in Goal 16 and Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), with deteriorating measures accounting for 60% and 40% respectively.
