Woman Missing After Being Swept Away by Flash Floods in Sicily
Favara: A woman was reported missing in the province of Agrigento town of Favara on Wednesday, apparently after being swept away by flash floods caused by torrential rain in Sicily. The woman is thought to have been swept away by the water after getting out of her car when it got stuck due to the extreme weather, which turned roads into rivers.
According to Ansa News Agency, firefighters are currently conducting a search for the missing woman. The severe weather has also affected other areas, with flooding reported in the city of Agrigento and the hamlet of San Leone, where many residents have been unable to leave their homes.
The incident follows a similar tragedy last week when a female German tourist died after being swept away by flash floods while camping in Spigno Monferrato, in the northern province of Alessandra.
Scientists have highlighted that the climate crisis, driven by human greenhouse gas emissions, is making extreme weather events such as these more frequent and intense. The primary source of these emissions is the burning of fossil fuels, including oil, gas, and coal, which continue to be lucrative for the world’s energy companies.
