Vatican Archives Preserve Henry VIII’s 1530 Request to Pope for Marriage Annulment

Vatican city: The Vatican Archives, renowned for preserving documents dating back to the 8th century, house a significant artifact-a letter from King Henry VIII to Pope Clement VIII requesting the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. This revelation comes during King Charles’s historic visit to the papal state.

According to Ansa News Agency, the letter, written in 1530, was an earnest plea from Henry VIII, further reinforced by the stamps of approval from 85 English nobles. Despite the support from these influential figures, Pope Clement VIII refused to grant the annulment. Undeterred, Henry VIII proceeded to marry Anne Boleyn and subsequently established the Anglican Church in 1534, declaring himself as its head.

The document, preserved meticulously in the Vatican, is notable for its large size and distinctive presentation. It features 83 signatures, arranged in 13 columns, connected by a red silk ribbon. From this ribbon hang 81 seals encased in tin and four empty cases, underscoring the importance and gravity of the request.
