US Must Apply Tariffs Correctly on Italian Exports – Tajani
Rome: The United States must apply tariffs correctly on Italian exports, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized after reports surfaced that certain US custom offices have been requesting higher tariffs for products such as Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano cheeses.
According to Ansa News Agency, the Foreign Ministry’s Tariff Task Force has been activated at Tajani’s request to protect Italian products from potential misinterpretations of the EU-US trade agreement. The Foreign Ministry has initiated specific measures with the US Embassy in Rome and the EU Commission’s Directorate-General for Trade, issuing similar instructions to the Italian Embassy in Washington.
The statement from the Farnesina highlighted Italy’s commitment to a “frank and constructive approach” with the United States, stressing the importance of advocating for the correct application of the trade agreement. Tajani assured that every available resource would be utilized to safeguard Italian businesses, workers, and the country’s manufacturing excellence. The Task Force is maintaining constant communication with the Customs and Monopolies Agency for any necessary technical coordination.
Italian goods, along with all EU exports, are currently subject to a 15% tariff under legislation introduced by former President Donald Trump.
