Truce Breach Could Be Sign of Iranian Divisions – Meloni

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni said Tuesday that the breach in the ceasefire between Israel and Iran could be a sign of divisions in Tehran as she reported to parliament before this week’s EU summit. “This morning the scenario was going in the direction we had hoped for,” Meloni told the Senate in relation to US President Donald Trump’s announcement of the ceasefire.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni noted that the situation has become more complicated again due to the truce being violated by Iran. She emphasized that Israel might respond, hoping that it would be in a commensurate and symmetrical manner. Despite the violation, Iran has reaffirmed its desire for a truce, which Meloni suggested could indicate internal divisions within Iran, an aspect that must be considered.

Meloni expressed confidence that moving forward with a truce and returning to negotiations is still feasible. She highlighted that if Iran were to renounce its nuclear program for military purposes, it would eliminate a significant threat to Israel and the region. Achieving this would pave the way for a ceasefire in Gaza and foster a serious path toward a two-peoples-two-states solution.

Meloni stressed Italy’s commitment to achieving this goal, as demonstrated by the statement from the G7 leaders based on an Italian proposal. Following a ceasefire in Gaza, Italy proposes involving Arab parties in the process. Meloni believes that efforts should begin with the Arab countries’ plan for the reconstruction of Gaza.
