Mattarella Highlights Institutional Absence in Urban Peripheries

Rome: President Sergio Mattarella emphasized on Tuesday that Italy’s public institutions often fail to demonstrate a strong presence in the peripheral areas of the nation’s cities. He expressed concerns about the growing disconnect between these regions and central institutions.

According to Ansa News Agency, Mattarella made these remarks in a statement commemorating the first ‘National Day of Urban Suburbs’. He highlighted that urban peripheries in some parts of Italy are becoming hotbeds of inequality and marginalization. These areas are often perceived as ‘non-places’ where a pervasive sense of abandonment and mistrust exists, largely due to the perceived distance of institutions.

Mattarella warned that such detachment poses the risk of deepening social fractures and fostering illegality. This, he noted, could hinder both personal and collective development and undermine the future prospects of children and young people living in these areas, ultimately affecting the future of the nation as a whole.
