Trkiye Seeks Enhanced Defense Ties with Germany Amid Broader Geopolitical Concerns: President Erdogan

ISTANBUL: Trkiye is aiming to bolster its defense procurement collaboration with Germany, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Istanbul. The Turkish leader emphasized the importance of overcoming past challenges related to the supply of defense industry products between the two nations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan underscored the mutual commitment of Ankara and Berlin to combat terrorist groups, notably the PKK and the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), which pose threats to public safety in Germany. FETO has been accused of orchestrating a failed coup attempt in Trkiye in 2016. Erdogan also highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the two NATO allies, reinforced by high-level visits, including a recent one by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Erdogan pointed to the significant Turkish diaspora in Germany and the substantial number of German tourists visiting Trkiye annually, expressing optimism for further growt
h in these figures. He noted that bilateral trade has reached $50 billion, with ambitions to increase it to $60 billion, emphasizing the countries’ shared interests and human connections as the driving force of their relationship.

Addressing the escalating Israeli military actions in Palestine and Lebanon, Erdogan criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “expansionist mindset” and called for international intervention to achieve a cease-fire and deliver humanitarian aid. He stressed that peace in the region is unattainable as long as Israeli attacks persist.

Erdogan also expressed concern over the rising influence of Islamophobic and xenophobic far-right movements in Europe, which he described as threats to Turkish communities abroad. Additionally, he discussed Trkiye’s aspirations in its relationship with the EU, with a particular focus on modernizing the Customs Union and achieving visa liberalization.

On migration, Erdogan reiterated Trkiye’s willingness to offer refuge, especially to Turk
mens from Lebanon amid escalating conflict. Turkish Navy ships have facilitated the evacuation of hundreds from Lebanon, where Israeli strikes have resulted in significant casualties.
