Tourism Sector Sees Growth in 2024 Driven by Foreign Visitors

FLORENCE: The tourism sector experienced growth in 2024, largely driven by an increase in foreign visitors, with estimated tourist presences reaching 458.5 million, marking a 2.5% increase compared to 2023. This information comes from preliminary figures released by the Centro Studi Turistici, a Florence-based institute, in collaboration with Assoturismo Confesercenti, the sector’s association.

According to Ansa News Agency, despite inflation-related price hikes, especially in services, the tourism industry maintained a positive trend throughout most of the year. The increase in foreign arrivals was a significant contributing factor. Conversely, domestic tourism experienced a decline, with a 2.8% drop in Italian presences and a 2.9% decrease in arrivals, primarily due to reduced purchasing power. This decline brought the estimated figures to 207 million presences and 63.8 million arrivals within Italy.

The data highlighted a contrasting trend for international visitors, who accounted for approximately 251.5 million presences, a 7.4% rise, and 72.1 million arrivals, up by 6.3%. This surge underscores the importance of foreign tourism in driving the overall growth of the sector in 2024.
