Mediterranean Migrant Crisis: Over 2,200 Dead or Missing in 2024, UNICEF Reports

ROME: Over 2,200 individuals have been reported dead or missing in the Mediterranean Sea in 2024, with nearly 1,700 fatalities occurring along the central Mediterranean route, according to UNICEF’s Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, Regina De Domicis. The alarming figures highlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

According to Ansa News Agency, De Domicis, who also serves as the special coordinator for the response to refugees and migrants in Europe, revealed that the victims include hundreds of children and teenagers. These figures were made public following a tragic shipwreck that took place on New Year’s Eve, where approximately 20 individuals who had set sail from Libya were reported missing.

The survivors of the recent shipwreck, numbering seven, included an eight-year-old boy who suffered the devastating loss of his mother. These survivors were initially brought to the Sicilian island of Lampedusa and subsequently transferred to a hosting center in Agrigento, Sicily. The incident underscores the peril faced by migrants undertaking the treacherous journey across the Mediterranean in search of safety and better opportunities.
