Florence: Incumbent centre-left Governor Eugenio Giani on Monday expressed gratitude to Tuscany following his re-election as the head of the central Italian region. “I’m thrilled. Thank you Tuscany,” stated Giani, a 66-year-old historian and lawyer known for his role as head of the Dante House and the Michelangelo House in Florence.
According to Ansa News Agency, Giani secured victory over the centre-right’s Alessandro Tomasi, a 46-year-old career politician and two-term mayor of Pistoia affiliated with Premier Giorgia Meloni’s rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party. Giani won by approximately 56% to 41% as per projections. This victory provided a boost to the centre-left coalition, which has been in opposition to Meloni, especially after recent electoral defeats in Marche and Calabria.
Looking ahead, there are three more regional elections scheduled for November 24-25 in Veneto, Campania, and Puglia. The centre-left is currently leading in opinion polls in Campania and Puglia, while they trail significantly in Veneto, historically dominated by the right-wing League party led by Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini. The centre-left’s advantage in Campania is largely due to the popularity of outgoing governor Vincenzo De Luca, whereas the centre-right’s lead in Veneto is attributed to the well-regarded incumbent League governor, Luca Zaia. The electoral contest in Puglia is anticipated to be more competitive.
