Tennis: Sinner Set for One-Year Number One Milestone
Rome: Italy’s Jannik Sinner is set to reach the milestone of being at the top of the ATP men singles ranking for a whole year after his rival Carlos Alcaraz pulled out of the Madrid Masters 1000 due to hamstring and groin injuries. This development ensures that Sinner will remain world number one until the end of Roland Garros, maintaining his position for 52 weeks from June 10, 2024, to June 9, 2025.
According to Ansa News Agency, Sinner, 23, is currently serving a three-month ban after testing positive for a banned substance. Initially, Sinner had been cleared of doping charges when it was discovered that the banned steroid had inadvertently entered his system through a trainer’s massage at the Indian Wells tournament last March. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) reopened the case and appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), leading Sinner to agree to a short ban to resolve the issue.
The suspension concludes on May 4, allowing Sinner to participate in the Italian Open.
