State of Emergency Declared for Campi Flegrei After Earthquake

Rome: The government has declared a state of emergency following a 4.4 magnitude earthquake and 35 seismic swarm aftershocks in Campi Flegrei, an area located west of Naples. Residents took to the streets, schools were closed, and trains were cancelled after the latest seismic event, Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci announced on Tuesday.

According to Ansa News Agency, Musumeci stated, “The persistence of the seismic swarm, which in two months has recorded three shocks clearly felt by the population, suggests the need to proceed with the declaration of a state of national emergency in the Campi Flegrei area.” This decision was made at the end of a summit in Rome, attended by key officials including the head of the Civil Protection department Fabio Ciciliano, the head of the prevention and reconstruction department of Casa Italia Luigi Ferrara, cabinet chief Riccardo Rigillo, and the head of the legislative office Francesco De Luca.
