Mattarella Highlights the Inviolability of EU Values During Portugal Visit

Lisbon: EU values do not allow moral compromises, President Sergio Mattarella emphasized while accepting an honorary degree at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, marking the beginning of a two-day visit to the Iberian country.

According to Ansa News Agency, Mattarella, in his address at the University of Coimbra, underscored the importance of universities in stimulating “knowledge and discussion.” He expressed his belief that constructive dialogue, a commitment to the common good, and adherence to deontological ethics, along with a willingness to innovate, are essential for the accumulation of productive social capital. These elements, he noted, are vital prerequisites for economic growth in advanced states of law, like those in Europe.

Mattarella further stated that these principles are manifestations of the fundamental values that Europeans share, which have shaped the European identity. These values, he insisted, do not permit moral compromises, reflecting the steadfast nature of EU principles. His remarks at the University of Coimbra, the oldest in the country, resonated with the theme of reinforcing the European identity through unwavering adherence to its core values.
