Rome: The leader of the largest opposition party, Elly Schlein of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), emphasized the need for a new alliance to create an alternative vision for Italy during a video address at the “Building the alternative” congress organized by the PD’s Energia Popolare in Rome. Schlein highlighted the importance of collaboration with other opposition members following regional election victories in Emilia Romagna and Umbria by centre-left candidates. She stressed that the initiative to construct a “proposal for Italy” would not be pursued in isolation, underlining the necessity of forming alliances with the country.
According to Ansa News Agency, Schlein also advocated for enhanced European integration. She affirmed her commitment to advancing the priorities of the European Socialist Party and the Democratic Party, particularly during what she described as a “complicated” European legislature. Her remarks underscored the significance of European cooperation in the party’s agenda.
In his
address to the same congress, the party’s President and MEP Stefano Bonaccini, who formerly served as the governor of Emilia Romagna, echoed the call for a new centre-left alliance. Bonaccini emphasized the need to establish credibility in their opposition efforts and to offer a viable alternative proposal. He pointed out that relying solely on a ‘broad field’ approach, spanning from the Centre to the Left, was insufficient and that the party did not aim to be self-sufficient or dominant. However, he made it clear that the PD would not tolerate any pressure from potential allies.
Bonaccini also proposed holding primaries to select the PD’s future parliamentary candidates, indicating a move towards more democratic processes within the party’s structure.
