Sardinian Governor Todde Loses Disqualification Appeal

Cagliari: A Cagliari court on Wednesday rejected an appeal by Sardinia Governor Alessandra Todde against a January 3 ruling disqualifying her as the president of the region. The case revolves around alleged irregularities in expenses for Todde’s successful regional election campaign in February 2024.

According to Ansa News Agency, Todde, a former MP for the 5-Star Movement (M5S) who was backed by a broad coalition of center-left parties in her quest to become Sardinia’s first female governor, expressed her intention to continue fighting the ruling. She emphasized the importance of respecting judicial decisions, even when she disagrees with them, and highlighted her commitment to the rule of law.

“Unlike those who choose to clash with the judiciary, we respect the role of judges and their decisions, even when we do not agree with them, as in this case,” Todde stated. She affirmed her belief in the legal process, which permits three levels of judgment, and her right and duty to defend herself in a trial. She remains steadfast in her stance that the alleged breaches do not exist, a position she claims is supported by the findings of the Court of Auditors and the Cagliari Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Todde’s determination to appeal the ruling indicates her resolve to contest the disqualification, as she believes the accusations lack foundation. Her ongoing legal battle underscores the complexities and challenges of political accountability and campaign financing in regional governance.
