Rome Film Fest to Honor Richard Linklater with Lifetime Achievement Award

Rome: This year’s Rome Film Fest, scheduled from October 15 to 26, will bestow its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award on Richard Linklater, hailed as “one of the greatest auteurs of contemporary American cinema,” according to the festival’s organizers. They highlighted his acclaimed works, including the “Before” trilogy-Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight-and the “poignant and revolutionary” film Boyhood, along with the cult comedy musical classic School of Rock.

According to Ansa News Agency, the festival organizers praised Linklater for his unique ability to explore linguistic possibilities and engage with multiple genres. At the Rome Film Fest, Linklater is set to present Nouvelle Vague, one of the most lauded films from the recent Cannes Film Festival. This film delves into the creation of the cult classic movie, Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless. The award will be presented by Marco Bellocchio, a veteran director and prominent figure in Italian cinema, marking the sixtieth anniversary of his debut masterpiece, Fists in the Pocket.

Born in Houston, Linklater, 65, is celebrated for his films that thematically explore suburban culture and the passage of time. His filmography includes Slacker (1990), Dazed and Confused (1993), the Before trilogy (1995-2013), School of Rock (2003), Waking Life (2001), A Scanner Darkly (2006), Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood (2022), Boyhood (2014), Everybody Wants Some!! (2016), Hit Man (2023), Blue Moon (2025), and Nouvelle Vague (2025).

Linklater’s films are often noted for their loosely structured narratives. Both the Before trilogy and Boyhood are distinguished by featuring the same actors filmed over several years. His accolades include five Academy Award nominations, a Silver Bear for Best Director for Before Sunrise, and a Golden Globe Award for directing Boyhood.
