Rome: Pope Francis can now go without oxygen therapy for “brief moments” as he recovers from double pneumonia in a Rome hospital, the Vatican announced Monday. The Vatican press office reported that the intensity of his oxygen therapy has been reduced, signaling a positive development in his recovery process.

According to Ansa News Agency, the Vatican also noted that Pope Francis’ discharge from Gemelli Hospital “is not imminent,” indicating that he will remain under medical care for the time being. A swelling observed in the Pope’s hand, as seen in the first hospital photo released on Sunday, is attributed to a lack of movement but is reportedly improving.

The Vatican press office further stated that the next update on the health of the 88-year-old Argentine pontiff, whose condition was critical until recent days, is scheduled for release on Wednesday.
