PD Demands Apology from Meloni Over Bibbiano Abuse Case Allegations

Rome: The centre-left Democratic Party (PD) has urged Premier Giorgia Meloni to issue an apology for allegedly politicizing the Bibbiano child abuse case. This call comes after a court dismissed nearly all charges related to the case on Wednesday night. The case involved accusations of inducing false memories of abuse and causing psychological harm to children, claims that were ultimately found to be unsubstantiated.

According to Ansa News Agency, the controversy began when Meloni, then in opposition with her right-wing Brothers of Italy party (FdI), pledged that her party would remain in Bibbiano until the alleged leftist-inspired abuse was resolved. The accusations were that foster children were being handed over to companies run by acquaintances of the accused. Right-wing League leader Matteo Salvini and former 5-Star Movement leader Luigi Di Maio also accused the PD of culpability, frequently visiting Bibbiano and promoting the narrative of widespread abuse.

PD Member of Parliament Marco Furfafo criticized Meloni’s actions, stating, “Giorgia Meloni must apologize. We are waiting confidently.” Furfafo recounted how Meloni and Salvini propagated false narratives, claiming that children were being taken by social services and placed with homosexual couples, and that there was a profit-driven system exploiting vulnerable children. He emphasized the lasting damage to the child protection system’s credibility due to these unfounded allegations.

Former PD leader and ex-premier Matteo Renzi echoed the call for an apology, describing the Bibbiano affair as a significant miscarriage of justice and a triumph of populism over reason. Renzi highlighted the media and political assault on former Bibbiano Mayor Andrea Carletti, who was acquitted, and denounced the roles of Di Maio and Meloni in fueling the scandal.

Renzi asserted that both Di Maio and Meloni should publicly acknowledge their exploitation of the case and apologize to those affected, including Carletti and the Bibbiano community. He expressed his own experiences of injustice, urging the political figures to take responsibility for their actions.
