Parolin and Tagle Lead Papal Betting Odds as Conclave Approaches

Vatican City: On the eve of the conclave to elect Pope Francis’s successor, international bookmakers are abuzz with predictions for the new leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics. Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin remains the frontrunner with over 32% of the bets, closely followed by Filipino cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who holds 16% of the betting shares.

According to Ansa News Agency, the odds for Ghana’s Peter Turkson and Hungary’s Peter Erdo stand at 8%, while Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and one of the three Italian heavyweights, holds 7%. The betting board shows a close competition between Parolin and Tagle, with both being offered at 3.50 by William Hill experts after the latest odds update. Previously, Tagle was leading as recently as Monday.

Trailing the two favorites are Turkson and Matteo Zuppi, chief of the Italian Bishops Conference (CEI) and Ukraine envoy, with odds of 5. A notable development is the rising odds for Mario Grech, a cardinal linked closely to the late Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Grech’s odds have significantly improved to 20, compared to 42 a week ago.

Betting analysts are also speculating on the conclave’s duration, predicting a short process with the announcement of the new Pope expected as early as May 8. The odds for this date are set at 2.10, ahead of May 9 at 2.75. May 10 is considered less likely at odds of 7, while the likelihood of an election on the first vote, on May 7, is given at 9.

In terms of the new Pope’s name, bookmakers favor Francis II, with odds at 5. The names John and John Paul follow at odds of 6, with Benedict trailing at 7.
