Italy Mothers Increasingly Isolated and Penalised, Says Report

Rome: Mothers in Italy are ever more alone and penalised, Save The Children said Tuesday. Single women with children are among those most at risk of poverty, as highlighted in the tenth Save The Children report titled ‘The Tightrope Walkers – Motherhood in Italy 2025’, which was released ahead of Mother’s Day on Sunday.

According to Ansa News Agency, the report reveals a significant employment gap in 2024, with a disparity of nearly 29 percentage points between fathers and mothers with at least one minor child. Additionally, only one in two single mothers, particularly those aged between 25 and 34, is employed, indicating the challenges they face in balancing work and family responsibilities.

The report also includes the Istat stats agency’s ranking of the most ‘mother friendly’ regions in Italy. The Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Emilia-Romagna, and Tuscany top the list, offering more supportive environments for mothers. Conversely, Basilicata ranks at the bottom, preceded by Campania, Puglia, and Calabria, highlighting regional disparities in support for mothers across the country.
