Nuns Organize Women’s Self-Defence Course in Bibbiano

Bibbiano: A convent of Italian nuns has initiated a self-defence course for women concerned about gender-based attacks. The course is being conducted by the Maria Ausiliatrice Institute in Bibbiano, near Reggio Emilia, and will run until the end of November.

According to Ansa News Agency, the initiative is a collaboration with the local Uchi Oroshi Judo sports association and has received the patronage of the Bibbiano town council. It was launched to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25th. The Salesian nuns in charge of the institute stated, “We always have a social dimension and a focus on the most vulnerable,” highlighting their commitment to supporting women.

The course, instructed by experts, includes self-defence techniques along with a program focused on body awareness, self-esteem, and crisis management. The nuns emphasized their aim to teach self-confidence and safety through movement and relationships, which they view as forms of prevention and growth. Classes are scheduled every Wednesday throughout November at the Bibbiano institute.

Sister Paola Della Ciana, the institute’s director, is a doctor and psychotherapist experienced in health and socio-emotional education. Established in 1920, the Maria Ausiliatrice Institute is a Catholic school with 42 teachers, 48 staff members, and 370 students across 17 classes, ranging from nursery to middle school, including a vocational program and a music school.
