Nordio Expresses Disorientation Over Delmastro’s Conviction

Rome: Justice Minister Carlo Nordio expressed his disorientation and sadness on Thursday regarding the conviction of Justice Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro for leaking classified information. The incident involved a party colleague attempting to discredit opposition politicians who visited jailed anarchist Alfredo Cospito.

According to Ansa News Agency, Nordio stated, “I am disoriented and saddened by a conviction that affects one of my dearest and most capable collaborators.” He emphasized his support for Delmastro, expressing hope for a significant reform during the appeal process. Nordio reiterated his “total and unconditional trust” in Delmastro, who is also a member of Premier Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy party.

Nordio further stated that they would continue to collaborate on essential justice reforms. These reforms include plans to separate the career paths of judges and prosecutors to prevent them from transitioning between the two roles. Delmastro received a suspended eight-month sentence as a result of the conviction.
