Delmastro Vows to Continue Judicial Reforms After Conviction

Rome: Justice Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro has declared that his recent conviction will not deter efforts to reform Italy’s judicial system. Delmastro, who received a suspended eight-month sentence for revealing classified information, described the verdict as politically motivated and emphasized the commitment of himself, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, and the center-right coalition to push forward with changes aimed at separating the career paths of judges and prosecutors.

According to Ansa News Agency, Delmastro expressed his sentiments on social media, labeling the sentence as inherently political and self-explanatory. He criticized the decision, particularly as the prosecution had previously called for his acquittal on three occasions. Delmastro questioned whether the verdict was an attempt to halt the reform efforts or to shield the Democratic Party from scrutiny.

Delmastro insisted that his actions were in defense of stringent prison terms for terrorists and members of organized crime, asserting that he remained true to his ideals. He expressed anticipation for the appeal process and reiterated his commitment to delivering what he termed a “different justice” for future generations.
