No Security by Dividing EU from U.S. Says Meloni

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday emphasized the impossibility of ensuring lasting security by separating Europe from the United States during a briefing to the Senate ahead of this week’s European Council.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni asserted, “It is a banal fact of reality that it isn’t possible to imagine a guarantee of enduring security by dividing Europe from the United States.” She underscored the importance of the transatlantic alliance as a cornerstone of European defense strategy.

Meloni further elaborated on the necessity for Europe to enhance its capabilities, stating, “It is right for Europe to equip itself to play its part but gullible to think it can do so on its own, outside the framework” of NATO. Her comments highlight the ongoing debate over Europe’s defense autonomy and the indispensable role of NATO in maintaining security across the continent.
