Nearly 97,000 Young Graduates Leave Italy in Last Decade

Rome: Some 97,000 young graduates have emigrated from Italy over the last decade, with a record 21,000 leaving the country last year alone, Istat President Francesco Maria Chelli reported during the national statistics agency’s annual presentation at the Lower House on Wednesday.

According to Ansa News Agency, Chelli highlighted that the decline in the Italian population, which began in 2014, continued last year, with the population dropping below the 59 million mark. He noted the ongoing decrease in the birth rate, stating that only 370,000 births were recorded in 2024. This decline in fertility rates has reached a historic low of 1.18 children per woman, influenced by a reduction in the number of women of childbearing age and the increasing postponement of parenthood.
