PALERMO — Several former close associates of the late Cosa Nostra superboss Matteo Messina Denaro were released from pre-trial custody on Monday after their sentences were reduced on appeal.
According to Ansa News Agency, the Court of Appeal of Palermo made the decision following guidance from the Supreme Court. The lack of evidence regarding the economic reinvestment of the proceeds of mafia activity led to a reevaluation of the sentences for these mafia bosses and their followers from Trapani, once under Messina Denaro’s control. Messina Denaro, known as ‘Cosa Nostra’s last boss,’ passed away last November at the age of 61. He was apprehended in January 2023 in Palermo after 30 years on the run.
The court’s review and subsequent decision to release Messina Denaro’s associates have sparked discussions on the legal proceedings and the standards required for such pre-trial detentions.
