Messina Bridge Construction to Commence as Audit Court Concerns Addressed

Rome: Transport Minister Matteo Salvini announced on Wednesday that the Italian government is set to address the Audit Court’s concerns regarding the Messina Bridge project, paving the way for construction to start later this year as planned. The long-delayed bridge aims to link Sicily with the Italian mainland.

According to Ansa News Agency, Salvini confirmed that the construction of the bridge, anticipated to be the world’s longest suspension bridge, will begin within weeks. A meeting was held to address the Court of Auditors’ requests for documents and clarifications, ensuring that due diligence is being observed in the project’s execution.

Salvini, who also serves as the deputy premier, emphasized the complexity of the project, asserting that the bridge will indeed become the world’s longest single-span bridge upon completion. The project is expected to generate approximately 120,000 jobs, a significant boost to the Italian economy. Salvini expressed bewilderment over the opposition from the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour trade union), highlighting the union’s focus on international issues over domestic employment opportunities.

The government has a two-week timeframe to respond to the Audit Court’s inquiries, after which construction is anticipated to begin swiftly. Salvini indicated his expectation for work to commence in the coming weeks, underscoring the project’s importance and the government’s commitment to its timely execution.
