Mattarella to Visit Estonia Base for Italian Jets

Amari: President Sergio Mattarella will this Friday, October 10, visit an air base in Estonia from which Italian jets have taken off to intercept Russian fighters. Mattarella will visit the Amari military base, Europe’s last outpost on the Russian border.

According to Ansa News Agency, the Air Task Force, composed of highly specialized personnel from the Italian Air Force and Army, operates there. Italy assumed responsibility for surveillance of Baltic airspace on August 1.

Two Italian F-35s took off from Amari base on September 19 after three Russian MiG-31 fighters overflew Estonian airspace. The Italian military is operating as part of the NATO Enhanced Air Policing mission.
