Merz Discusses US Tariffs with Meloni in Weekend Talks

Berlin: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke to Premier Giorgia Meloni over the weekend during a series of telephone conversations aimed at addressing potential US tariffs on European goods, German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius informed reporters on Monday.

According to Ansa News Agency, Merz also engaged in discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron. Kornelius emphasized the importance of timing in these negotiations, stating, “The time factor is of great significance,” and further added, “Time is money.”

Kornelius highlighted that the discussions are ongoing and that a unified position has not yet been finalized. “The talks are not yet over. The process of building a position is not yet over,” he said, indicating that negotiations are being carried out in close collaboration with European partners.
