Meloni Criticizes Opposition’s False Claims of Tourism Crisis

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday criticized opposition claims that Italy’s tourist industry is in crisis amid reports of a sharp decrease in beach-goers due to rising prices of sunbeds and beach umbrellas. Meloni countered these allegations, asserting they were misleading and damaging to Italy’s image.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni specifically addressed accusations made by Elly Schlein, leader of the Democratic Party (PD), Italy’s largest opposition group. Schlein had implied that the Italian tourism sector was experiencing a downturn. Meloni condemned these statements, stating, “I find it shameful that, in order to attack the government, certain opposition figures spread false news, damaging Italy’s image and interests.”

Meloni further emphasized that official data contradicted the claims of a tourism crisis. “In recent days, among other statements, Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein also implied that Italian tourism was in crisis,” she said. However, she highlighted that data from the Interior Ministry, derived from the State Police’s ‘Alloggiati web’ database, showed increasing arrivals and millions of visitors to accommodation facilities across Italy.

Meloni expressed frustration over what she termed as “mystifications and fabricated falsehoods,” asserting that facts and figures countered the misleading narratives. “Those who truly love their nation don’t discredit it before the world for political expediency,” she remarked, emphasizing the need for unity in promoting Italy’s interests.

In conclusion, Meloni affirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing Italy’s appeal and pride. “We will continue to work to make it stronger, more attractive, and more proud of itself every day,” she declared.
