Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban emphasized the need to reinforce the concept of safe countries for migrant repatriation following their discussions in Rome. This comes after Italian judges ruled against detaining migrants in Albanian-based processing centers, citing that countries like Egypt and Bangladesh are not fully considered safe.
According to Ansa News Agency, the leaders issued a joint statement asserting the importance of combating irregular migration. They highlighted the necessity for enhanced cooperation with countries of origin and transit to address root causes and combat human trafficking and smuggling, aiming to prevent both loss of life and irregular departures.
Additionally, Meloni and Orban expressed the urgency of updating the legal framework to facilitate, increase, and expedite repatriations from the European Union. They stressed the need to focus on solidifying the concept of safe countries of origin to streamline this process.
