Mediterranean Reflections: Italy and Spain Celebrate 160 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Madrid: A conference entitled “Mediterranean Reflections: Italy and Spain, Centuries of Encounters,” organized to mark the 160th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Italy and Spain, was held Thursday at the Amboage Palace, residence of the Italian Embassy in Spain. The initiative highlighted the historical, cultural, and intellectual roots that unite the two countries, emphasizing the role of knowledge, education, and media in building a common European identity.

According to Ansa News Agency, in his opening remarks, Ambassador Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi recalled how the inspiration for the conference was linked to His Majesty King Felipe VI’s state visit to Italy last December, during which the sovereign described this anniversary as a sign of “solidarity, trust and historical cooperation” between the countries. This message is seen as especially relevant in an international context that calls for collaboration and structured dialogue between governments, universities, territories, and businesses.

Ainhoa F¡brega Larrucea, director general for Europe at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the significant Italian presence in Spain, evidenced by academic exchanges, tourism, and strong ties between the civil societies of the two nations. The conference, moderated by Francesco Battigelli, featured leading academics and cultural personalities.

Among the speakers, Professor Ricardo Ruiz de la Serna provided an analysis on the evolution of the perception of Italy in Spain, interweaving history, culture, and current events. Alfonso de Ceballos-Escalera y Gila, Marquis de la Floresta, traced the history of bilateral relations through the lens of cultural diplomacy.

Amalio de Marichalar y S¡enz de Tejada, count of Ripalda, spoke on the symbolic significance of the archaeological site of Numancia as an example of resilience and determination. Dr. Lavinia Monti, director of the Office for the Internationalization of Higher Education at the Ministry of Universities and Research, illustrated the dynamism of academic relations between Italy and Spain.

Professors Dario Costi and Antonio Pizza concluded the conference by demonstrating how mutual influences between the architectural traditions of Italy and Spain have enriched international debate, confirming the value of cultural interchange as a tool for dialogue and shared growth.
