Mediterranean Reflections: Italy and Spain Celebrate 160 Years of Diplomatic Relations
Madrid: A conference entitled “Mediterranean Reflections: Italy and Spain, Centuries of Encounters,” was held at the Amboage Palace, the residence of the Italian Embassy in Spain, marking the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Spain. The event focused on the shared historical, cultural, and intellectual connections that bind the two countries, highlighting the importance of knowledge, education, and media in fostering a common European identity.
According to Ansa News Agency, Ambassador Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi opened the conference by referencing King Felipe VI’s state visit to Italy last December. During that visit, the King described the anniversary as a symbol of “solidarity, trust, and historical cooperation” between Italy and Spain. This message of collaboration and dialogue is particularly significant in today’s international context, which calls for stronger ties between governments, universities, and businesses.
Ainhoa F¡brega Larrucea, director general for Europe at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscored the strong Italian presence in Spain, reflected in academic exchanges, tourism, and the close relationships between the civil societies of both nations. The conference, moderated by Francesco Battigelli, featured contributions from prominent academics and cultural figures.
Professor Ricardo Ruiz de la Serna delved into the evolving perception of Italy in Spain, weaving together historical, cultural, and contemporary perspectives. Alfonso de Ceballos-Escalera y Gila, Marquis de la Floresta, explored the history of bilateral relations through cultural diplomacy. Amalio de Marichalar y S¡enz de Tejada, count of Ripalda, highlighted the archaeological site of Numancia as a symbol of resilience and determination. Dr. Lavinia Monti, director of the Office for the Internationalization of Higher Education, discussed the dynamic academic relations between the countries.
Professors Dario Costi and Antonio Pizza concluded the conference by illustrating how the architectural traditions of Italy and Spain have influenced each other, enriching international discourse and demonstrating the value of cultural interchange for dialogue and growth.
