Mattarella Highlights Concerns Over Declining Multilateralism at FAO Event

Rome: President Sergio Mattarella lamented the retreat of multilateralism, saying this was having a negative impact on key challenges such as the fight against hunger, in his address at the World Food Day ceremony at the Rome headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Thursday.

According to Ansa News Agency, Mattarella emphasized the contradiction of advancements in knowledge, resources, and technological potential alongside emerging scenarios of famine, unacceptable inequalities, and a regression of the multilateral system. He described this situation as a “sad paradox,” highlighting the importance of a multilateral approach as the only paradigm capable of effectively addressing these global needs.

Mattarella further expressed that the reversal of multilateral progress is both incomprehensible and unacceptable. He underscored the value of multilateral institutions, especially those directly involved in combating food insecurity, as essential tools that demonstrate the interconnectedness of human destinies.
