Man Sentenced to Life for Double Murder of Ex-Girlfriend’s Family
Latina: A 28-year-old finance police officer, Christian Sodano, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Latina for the murder of Nicoletta Zomparelli and Ren¨e Amato, the mother and sister of his former girlfriend, in February 2024. The tragic incident took place in the town of Cisterna di Latina, where Sodano shot the victims. During the attack, his ex-girlfriend, Desir¨e Amato, managed to escape and survived.
According to Ansa News Agency, the case has highlighted the pressing issue of gender-based violence in Italy, which has been underscored by a disturbing series of femicides in recent years. The country is grappling with addressing this societal problem amid increasing calls for action and reform.
Latina, a city established in 1932 by Mussolini in the reclaimed Pontine Marshes, is home to approximately 100,000 residents. It serves as one of the five provincial capitals of Lazio, alongside Rome, Rieti, Viterbo, and Frosinone. The town of Cisterna di Latina, located about 10 kilometers closer to Rome than Latina, is historically significant as the site of a major World War II battle. Latina itself is situated approximately 55 kilometers from the Italian capital.
