Man Arrested for Allegedly Attacking Ex-Partner with Hammer

Mantua: A 40-year-old Moroccan citizen has been arrested by Carabinieri police on attempted murder charges for allegedly attacking his 38-year-old ex-partner with a hammer, investigative sources said on Wednesday. The man has been detained on aggravated attempted murder charges, the sources explained.

According to Ansa News Agency, the victim, who is also Moroccan and has been living in the Mantua area with her two children, aged 11 and 9, is in critical condition after her ex-partner allegedly struck her 10 times on the head with a hammer. She underwent emergency surgery but remains in a life-threatening condition, as reported by medical sources.

The attack occurred on Monday, though the incident was only made public on Wednesday. The victim was rescued by a delivery man who called an ambulance after she cried for help from her home in Roncoferrato near Mantua. Before undergoing a complex neurological procedure, she informed Carabinieri police at the hospital that her ex-partner was the assailant.

According to investigative sources, several witnesses saw the man leaving his former partner’s home after the attack. The man, who has a criminal record for abuse and violence, was recently reported to authorities by the woman for stalking after he attempted to break into her home. She had installed a video surveillance camera outside her apartment, which her ex-partner tried to destroy, as noted by investigative sources.

Traces of blood were also found in the man’s residence following a search by investigators, according to the sources. This case is the latest in an alarming spate of attacks against women in Italy.
