Jewish Professor Dismissed Over Anti-Zionist Post, Sparking Free Speech Debate

ALLENTOWN: Maura Finkelstein, a Jewish anthropology professor at Muhlenberg College, has been dismissed from her academic position following anti-Zionist comments made on social media, igniting a broader discussion on academic freedom and free speech in the United States.

According to Anadolu Agency, the dismissal of Finkelstein, who had been with the college for nine years and taught courses on Palestine, has raised concerns about the implications for higher education. Finkelstein, an outspoken anti-Zionist, argues that her termination sets a dangerous precedent. Despite growing up in a Zionist family, her perspective shifted during a classroom debate about the Oslo Peace Accords, where she represented Palestine. She expressed that her newfound understanding of Israel as a colonial project in which Palestinians faced genocide and dispossession led to her current stance.

Finkelstein faced mounting pressure from pro-Israel donors following the events of October 7, 2023. An investigation into her academic wor
k found no violations, but her dismissal was triggered by a social media post in January featuring a message from Palestinian poet Rami Kanazi. A student complaint claimed that Finkelstein’s views created an unsafe classroom environment, ultimately leading to her termination without compensation on January 24.

Her appeals process is ongoing, with Finkelstein hoping for a favorable outcome from a faculty panel. She warns that equating Zionism with Judaism and its inclusion in anti-discrimination policies could have significant consequences for academic freedom. The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has criticized her dismissal, marking it as a first of its kind for a tenured professor over comments related to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
