Italy Reaffirms Commitment to EU Trade Framework Amid Trump’s Comments

Rome: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that Italy continues to operate within the European Union framework on trade, following a social media repost by US President Donald Trump. The repost suggested that Premier Giorgia Meloni might be considering a separate trade deal for Italy, outside of the EU.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani emphasized Italy’s consistent collaboration with the EU. “We have always worked with the EU, and thanks to Italy, we have been able to make some important steps forward,” he remarked in response to Trump’s post. He further assured that Italy’s efforts are in sync with the EU’s Trade Commissioner, Maros €š¬¦ efcovic.

Tajani highlighted ongoing efforts to persuade the EU to include specific Italian products within a general 15% threshold, specifically mentioning wines, steel, and aluminium. He added, “So we’re working on it; obviously we’re talking to the Americans too, and we’ll see how we can best protect the interests of our industrial and agro-industrial production.”
