Mattarella ‘Feels at Home’ in Europe’s Capital Brussels

Brussels: Italian President Sergio Mattarella expressed his sense of belonging in Brussels during a speech at the Belgian parliament as part of his State visit on Monday. He emphasized the city’s significance as the capital of Europe and acknowledged the warm reception he received.

According to Ansa News Agency, Mattarella highlighted the cooperative spirit exemplified by Belgium, noting its role as a model for collaboration on the continent. During his address to Senate President Vincent Blondel and House of Representatives Speaker Peter De Roover, he expressed gratitude for the welcome he received, reflecting on his own experience in the Italian Chamber of Deputies. He underscored the importance of Parliament as a cornerstone of democracy, drawing parallels between Belgium’s and Italy’s bicameral systems.

Mattarella also conveyed his appreciation for the invitation from His Majesty the King of Belgium, viewing the visit as an opportunity to reinforce the historic ties and brotherhood between the two nations. He emphasized the strong collaborative relationship between Belgium and Italy, both of which are among the six founding countries of the European Union. He remarked on the shared vision of the founding members to build a unified future, acknowledging the historical significance of their early efforts and the importance of all member states in the Union.
